Does colour, light, exposure etc have anything to do with Resolution?

I'm pretty certain of the answer but need it to be confirmed please. My understanding is no it doesn't, it's in the dpi's and image sizing.
I have a client (my first) who doesnt know about photography but she's insisting the photo is too dark and it needs to be taken again on a higher resolution..i have a Nikon D40x!! Please tell me i'm not nuts in thinking that that doesn't make sense!!!

You are correct and your client is wrong.

However, the picture may not be properly exposed since it looks too dark. If that is the problem then you need to re-shoot and make certain the exposure is right.

I believe "nutmac" is somewhat confused. Correct exposure is a product of the interaction of 4 variables: light, ISO, f-stop and shutter speed. When using available light (no flash) you have 3 variables. Once you set the ISO you have 2 variables - f-stop and shutter speed.

ISO is simply a measurement of the sensitivity to light of a light sensitive surface, whether film or digital sensor. A low ISO - 100, 200 - will give the best results. However, it requires either a large aperture (f1.7, f2) or a slow shutter speed. A high ISO (400, 800) allows a smaller aperture (f4, f5.6) or a faster shutter speed.

The f-stop (aperture) controls how much light is admitted. If you use f1.7 or f2 you're shooting "wide open" and admitting all of the available light. At f5.6 of f8 your lens admits very little light.

The shutter speed controls how long the light is allowed to expose our light sensitive surface. With f1.7 or f2 your shutter speed will be higher; at f8 it will slow substantially.

Lets look at a hypothetical example using ISO 100 on a sunny day. NOTE: Although these examples may never be duplicated in real life, the relationship shown is 100% valid.

f2 @ 1/1000
f2.8 @ 1/500
f4 @ 1/250
f5.6 @ 1/125
f8 @ 1/60
f11 @ 1/30
f16 @ 1/15

Since f2.8 admits 1/2 as much light as f2, our shutter speed slows to compensate and allows the light admitted to expose our light sensitive surface twice as long. f4 admits 1/2 as much light as f2.8, etc.

All 7 exposures would be identical. Yes, identical. The only difference we'll see is an improvement in image quality as we stop down to f5.6 and smaller. Why? Because lenses are at their very best between f5.6 and f11. The other thing we'd notice is an increase in Depth of Field beginning at f4.
