Reverend Kevin Annett ought to be a national hero. More than any one person, he was responsible for bringing the story of abuse in British Columbia's aboriginal residential schools into public view. Almost single-handedly, he brought to light one of the biggest human rights crimes ever committed in Canada.
But in the upside-down world we live in, the Kevin Annett's are hunted down and while the people who profit from secret genocide are pillars of society.
As a result of his dedicated work since 1992, Annett now finds himself isolated and impoverished, surviving in a remote community on Vancouver Island, a few km. from Port Alberni where he was once a United Church minister.
He's no longer pastor of a variegated "flock" of parishioners from both sides of BC's ethnic divide. The white folks who once made up the whole congregation before Annett's arrival, made it clear they would not tolerate a mixing of races in their church. With typical Canadian politeness, they avoided saying so openly, but they made their message clear: Indians were not welcome. The food bank Annett set up for the destitute residents of Port Alberni's native ghetto, was closed at around the same time Annett was dismissed.
The church that once welcomed him, has since done its best to destroy his career and reputation.
The Kevin Annett of today is a chastened man with a determined manner, and a lot of anger simmering under the surface....
Descended from Irish immigrants who came to Ontario in the Famine Years, Annett turns 50 this year. Ten years ago, in BC, he was found guilty of the crime of practicing what he preaches: of putting New Testament values, like "love thy neighbour", into effect. For this crime, he was slandered, ostracized, and put on trial by the community that once welcomed him as its minister. Behind the scenes, powerful interests pulled more than the usual number of strings - the RCMP, the BC government, and above all the pulp and paper companies that were once the mainstay of this provincial economy based on natural resources, and now are engaged in pillaging what remains of the province's forests.
A twentieth century tale of greed has now turned into a major twenty-first century cover up. People whose middle-class lives were built on the theft of aboriginal land and recourses, are not about to turn around and admit that they are guilty of selling off those resources to the American corporations that now have carte blanche to steal what's left. Or that the crushing poverty of the majority of surviving First Nations people in this province, is the direct consequence of that land grab for quick profit.
Looking ahead, you can see this ugly drama continuing to play out for another century, until there is nothing left of the resource economy, or the social fabric that once made BC "the best place to live on the planet."
By then, the corporate giants who created this colour-divided society of haves and have-nots, will have moved on to some other wilderness - if any are left.
People like Kevin Annett, who have the courage to stand up and point out the obvious failings and injustices, are rare in this world, and it's unlikely they will ever again belong to a church.
Today Annett lives in the aftermath of a disaster that struck him 10 years ago. Most people have never heard of him, and our media continue to downplay the atrocities he has uncovered. There is talk of "compensation" but it comes with a gag order - the victims whose lives were ruined in church-run residential schools will receive $10,000 in return for their continued silence.
These days, Annett spends a lot of time in Vancouver's Lower East Side, where he is known as an outspoken organizer and a friend to drug addicts and prostitutes, many of whom come from native villages around the province, where poverty and suicide are rampant.
He limits his church going to occasional demonstrations in which he and a group of supporters show up unannounced to challenge the population that still attends religious services. This year, at Easter, 100 people picketed outside Holy Rosary Catholic Church in downtown Vancouver. They gathered to ask a simple question to the Catholic, Anglican and United Churches of Canada: Where are the remains of more than 50,000 children who died in Indian Residential Schools?
